Black Studies

The in class video on Black Studies was a really eye opener for me. There are so many things that I really never know and that is never taught in school. For instance, before watching the movie, I did not know that there had been such a push to get Black Studies in the collages. That was a huge accomplishment for those who tried so hard to be able to teach and those who wanted to go to the classes, and yet, it is never talked about in the history books. There are still a lot of things that I do not know about what really happened in the struggle that the black people in America faced in order to get Black Studies in the schools but I hope that I will learn that and so much more as the semester unfolds.

  1. We should also be aware that this battle to create and expand Black Studies on college campuses beginning in 1968 took place on historically black college and university campuses (HBCUs), as well as on white mainstream campuses. This reminds us that the whole intellectual project of Black Studies is to challenge an educational system that values only what white Western society has produced or created, at the expense of all other intellectual traditions.
